Quarterfinal Playoff Preview

Kyle's Random Thoughts.

The regular season has come and gone in the blink of an eye and the teams left standing have circled December 2 and 3 on the calendar. On those two days the state championship games will be held in Canton and Massillon. You can hear the OHSAA Radio Network's live coverage of all six state championship games on North Coast Pigskin.

Clyde, Crestview and Sandusky have won the three area conferences with undefeated league records. For the Fliers, it's their fifth consecutive Sandusky Bay Conference Championship and second straight outright title. The Cougars become the third team (St. Paul in 2009 and Western Reserve in 2010) in the last three years to run the table in the Firelands and win the championship, while the Blue Streaks earned their first Northern Ohio League title in school history.

Sandusky
and Clyde hold the top two positions in our final North Coast Pigskin Power Poll of the regular season. Our next and final poll will be released after the playoffs.

It's time for a little OHSAA Football Trivia. Which team in this years playoffs has the most tournament wins?  You'll find the answer at the bottom of today's blog.

Featured Regional Quarterfinal Game (This game we'll be covering and will provide complete scoring updates on our Scoreboard):

Tiffin Columbian
(8-2) @ Sandusky (9-1)

Sandusky defeated the Tornados (35-34) just two weeks ago at Strobel Field in one of the most entertaining area games this season. Will these two teams duplicate the same "instant classic" in the Quarterfinal round of the OHSAA playoffs?

The Blue Streaks defense helped erase a 14-0 second quarter deficit with two consecutive interceptions that turned into 13 points. Sandusky managed a 21-14 lead at the half, but the two teams traded scores in the final 24 minutes. Columbian came within one point (35-34) of the Streaks on a Jack Jacoby fourth quarter 15-yard touchdown run, but the extra point attempt failed and Sandusky earned the hard fought victory.

Jacoby, who ran the Tornado's "Wildcat" offense, had a huge night against the Blue Streaks defense with 231 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Sandusky senior quarterback Lucas Poggiali paced the Streaks offense with 111 rushing yards, 144 passing yards and three touchdowns.

Sandusky
is making its ninth appearance in the playoffs and has an overall record of 5-8 in post season play, including a 2010 Quarterfinal win over Avon (42-35).

Columbian advanced the Regional Finals a year ago and is making its 12th appearance in the playoffs with an overall record of 7-11.

Watch the game Friday night at 10 p.m. on www.Fandy.com.

Other Area Regional Quarterfinal Games:
Division III Region 10 on Friday @ 7:30 p.m.
Napoleon (5-5) @ Clyde (8-2)
The Fliers are 13-6 in the playoffs and won the 1995 State Championship.
Napoleon is making its first appearance since 2009 and is 4-9 in playoff games.

Elida (7-3) @ Bellevue (7-3)
The Redmen enter the post season for the first time since 2008 and have an overall playoff record of 9-12.
Elida is making its third appearance in the post season and has a record of 1-2.

Division IV Region 14 on Saturday @ 7 p.m.
Huron (9-1) @ Genoa (9-1)
The Tigers are making their 15th appearance in the post season and have split their previous 28 games (14-14).
Genoa is making their fifth post season run and has an overall playoff record of 7-4.

Division V Region 19 on Friday @ 7:30 p.m.

Crestview (10-0) @ Columbus Grandview Heights (10-0)
The Cougars have never won a playoff game and are making their first post-season appearance since 2009 when they lost to the Hillsdale Falcons in the Quarterfinals.
Grandview Heights has not been to the post season since 2005 and is making just their third appearance (1-2) in school history.

Week Ten Predictions

North Coast Pigskin 2011 Record (32-8)
I'm 19-1 in the last four weeks.

Sandusky (8-1, 4-0) @ Bellevue (7-2, 4-0)
Winner: Sandusky
Why? Sandusky had an emotional 35-34 win last week over Columbian, while Bellevue rolled over Shelby 42-6. The Blue Streaks has a hard time containing wildcat quarterback Jack Jacoby for the Tornados and now they face the multitalented Jalen Santoro. I still like the Streaks to outscore the Redmen in the NOL title game this week.

Port Clinton (5-4, 3-3) @ Clyde (7-2, 6-0)
Winner: Clyde
Why?  The Fliers have already earned a share of their fifth consecutive SBC title, but Huron would love to take a piece of the SBC pie. The Tigers need Port Clinton to pull an upset this Friday to make that happen. I don't think Coach Gibson and the Fliers feel like sharing and I predict they'll run the table in the SBC this year.

Columbian (7-2, 2-2) Vs. Norwalk (7-2, 2-2)
Winner: Columbian
Why? The battle for third place in the NOL will be played in Tiffin between two 7-2 football teams. I was impressed with the Tornados last week in a loss to Sandusky and they still have playoff aspirations. This would be a great win for the Truckers and solidify their season. I think Columbian will win this game, but it will be much closer than most people think.

Plymouth (5-3, 4-2) @ Crestview (9-0, 6-0)
Winner: Crestview
Why? The Cougars scored another last minute win against St. Paul on Friday, while the Big Red lost in overtime for the second consecutive week. This should be a very entertaining game, but I like the Cougars to secure the outright Firelands football title this week.

Monroeville (2-7, 1-5) Vs. St. Paul (5-4, 4-2)
Winner: St. Paul
Why? Revenge is a wonderful reason to play a football game and the Flyers still remember their season ending at Marsh Field last year with a loss to the Eagles.  I expect St. Paul to roll to a victory on Saturday night at Whitney Field.

Week Ten Preview

Kyle's Random Thoughts.

Kyle's Random ThoughtsThis will be my last blog of the regular season and I'm finding it hard to believe how fast the high school football season elapses each year. I'm hoping a few area teams make will make long runs in the playoffs and I can continue to talk area high school football well into November.  Just a reminder, you can hear all six OHSAA Football Championship games December 2 and 3 on North Coast Pigskin.

Friday's game between Columbian and Sandusky was an "instant classic" and one of the best high school football games I've seen in years. The Streaks battled back from a 14-0 deficit and scored the final 21 points of the first half. The teams then traded scores in the second half and a missed extra point by the Tornados was the difference in the contest. The Sandusky defense started the comeback by picking off consecutive passes from Columbian quarterback Ben Davis (that tuned into 13 Blue Streak points) and they finished the game with a fourth down stand in their own territory.  If you would like to watch a rebroadcast of the "instant classic" click here.

Cre
stview has been a team on a mission all year and has earned at least a share of the Firelands Conference football title with their last minute win over St. Paul.  The Cougars Garrick Montgomery scored with less than a minute left in the game to seal the victory. Crestview (9-0) will win the outright title if they defeat Plymouth (5-4). The Cougars are now the third team in three years to win the championship (St. Paul in 2009 and Western Reserve in 2010).

This just in, Clyde has won another Sandusky Bay Conference Football title. The Fliers are running out of trophy space and will have to build an addition to the high school to handle their fifth consecutive championship trophy. Coach Marc Gibson had to replace several key pieces from last year's 10-2 squad, but after starting the season 0-2 the Fliers have now won seven straight games and another SBC title. They can win the outright championship this week when the host Port Clinton.

Perkins picked up a second straight victory last week with a 6-0 win over Margaretta. Mitchell Benkey had the games only score on a 40-yard run in the fourth quarter. Pirate coach Jason Ziegler will be our special guest on the Week Ten Podcast Preview
and will talk about the season, the new stadium project, this week's game with Oak Harbor and give us his thoughts on the NOL title game.  Perkins played both Bellevue and Sandusky to start the season.

Featured Game (This game we'll be covering and will provide complete scoring updates on our Scoreboard):

Bellevue (7-2, 4-0) @ Sandusky (8-1, 4-0)
Audio Preview
The Northern Ohio League championship will come down to the final week with a winner take all match-up between the Blue Streaks and the Redmen.

Sandusky
has won eight straight games, after escaping Strobel Field last week with a one point win over Columbian, and is still hoping to host a first round playoff game.  Bellevue shocked everyone with a 20-6 win over the Tornados to start NOL play and is on a five game winning streak.

The Blue Streaks are multifaceted on offense and boast the number one unit in the NOL. They managed 335 yards and 35 points last week against a very good defense, but they still stalled at times with fumbles, uncharacteristic dropped passes and penalties.

The Blue Streak defense was big last week, despite giving up 34 points to the Tornados. Sandusky turned two first half interceptions into 13 points (including a pick six by Tristen Jeffries) and had a game winning defensive stand late in the ball game.

Bellevue
relies on their junior quarterback Jalen Santoro to make their offense run. The area was a buzz last week with rumors about a broken collarbone for the Redmen signal caller, but he managed 153 yards rushing on 12 carries and threw for three touchdown passes against Shelby. He must be a quick healer.

The Redmen defense has yielded more than six points only once in the last five weeks.  Bellevue spotted Norwalk a 14-0 advantage, but shut down the Trucker offense the rest of the contest.

Watch the game Friday night at 10 p.m. on www.Fandy.com.

Other Games of Interest:
Monroeville (2-7, 1-5) @ St. Paul (5-4, 4-2)
It's the area's version of Ohio State and Michigan. Two schools that love to hate each other. North Coast Pigskin will provide scoring updates Saturday on our Twiiter Scoreboard
and you can also watch the game live on Fandy.com.

Port Clinton (5-4, 4-2) @ Clyde (7-2, 6-0)
Port Clinton was hoping to celebrate a winning season two weeks ago at the expense of Perkins, but the Redskins find themselves in the midst of a two-game losing streak. The Fliers have won seven straight games and a share of their fifth consecutive SBC title. A win over Port Clinton on Friday would give the Fliers the outright SBC championship.

Plymouth (5-4, 4-2) @ Crestview (9-0, 6-0)
This game could have been for the outright Firelands title, but the Big Red has lost two consecutive overtime games to St. Paul and Western Reserve. Plymouth can still spoil the party for Crestview and create a co-championship in the Firelands with a victory. That's exactly what Western Reserve fans are hoping for on Friday night.

Week Nine Predictions

North Coast Pigskin 2011 Record (27-8)

I'm 14-1 in the last three weeks.

Sandusky (7-1, 3-0) @ Tiffin Columbian (7-1, 1-2)

Winner: Sandusky
Why? I like the Streaks to extend their winning streak to eight games this week over the Tornados. Columbian should be the best team the Streaks have played since opening the season with Fremont Ross, but Sandusky is firing on all cylinders right now and will be tough to beat. The Blue Streak offense is getting all the press, but the first string defense has not given up a point in NOL play.

Port Clinton (5-3, 3-2) @ Huron (7-1, 4-1)
Winner: Huron
Why?  The Tigers are playing good football right now and will have a chance this week to keep their SBC title hopes alive and better their playoff positioning. The Redskins are still playing for their playoff lives and that elusive winning season, but I like the Tigers to roar on Friday night in Huron.

Clyde (6-2, 5-0) @ Edison (4-4, 3-2)
Winner: Clyde
Why? The Chargers are on a roll having won three of their last four games, but Clyde is on a mission and hoping for their fifth consecutive SBC title. I can't predict the upset in this one and will stick with the Fliers to earn a share of the crown on Friday night.

Western Reserve (5-3, 4-1) @ Plymouth (5-3, 4-1)
Winner: Western Reserve
Why? You could toss a coin to predict the winner in all four Firelands games this weekend.  The Rough Riders won a shoot-out last week with New London, while the Big Red fell short in overtime at St. Paul. Both teams could still win a share of the Firelands title, but I like the Rough Riders in this one.

Crestview (8-0, 5-0) Vs. St. Paul (5-3, 4-1)
Winner: Crestview
Why? This might sound familiar, but you could toss a coin to predict the winner in all four Firelands games this weekend.  A St. Paul win would make it a three team race in the Firelands heading into the final week of play, while a Cougar victory would give them a chance at running the table in the conference. I can't wait to see the highlights of this game Friday night and I'll stick with the Cougars.

Week Nine Preview

Kyle's Random Thoughts.

Don't look now, but I'm on a roll with my area high school football predictions. In the last three weeks here on North Coast Pigskin I've gone 14-1 and in the Fandy.com Magazine I'm 20-1 in the last two weeks. Don't miss my predictions every Wednesday on the NCP Blog Page and Thursday in the Norwalk Reflector and Sandusky Register.

Norwalk
jumped out to a 14-0 lead in our featured game Friday night over rival Bellevue, but the Redmen scored the final 28 points of the game. I felt like the Trucker defense did a good job defending quarterback Jalen Santoro, but the difference in the game was turnovers, personal foul penalties and Bellevue's Dalton Jarvis. The senior rushed for 136 yards on 23 carries and a score.

Norwalk Football Field on 10/15/11Too much was made of the field conditions at Whitney Field (see the picture to the left). I walked on it before the game and it was not bad at all. It felt like the infield of a baseball field and held up for two games this weekend.  I can't believe it was the same field that hosted the St. Paul and Western Reserve game two weeks ago when it looked more like a mud pit than a football field. Kudos to the hard working grounds crew at Whitney Field.  The best line of the weekend goes to the WLKR broadcast crew of Scott Truxell and Mark Lane who said they felt like they were watching a game at the old Municipal Stadium in Cleveland.

In case you missed it in the local media, Willard held a press conference last week to announce they're staying in the NOL. In related news, it looks like Vermilion will be jumping ship from the West Shore Conference and joining the league.  In joking fashion the Norwalk PA announcer made a statement late in the game Friday saying "Norwalk and Bellevue will remain in the Northern Ohio League next year."

Every Friday I watch "Scores and More" on WMFD in Mansfield as I'm updating the conference scores and standings on the Website. Last week, however, the entire show had no audio. I'm glad it was television so I could at least enjoy the pictures.

Plymouth
almost pulled out a win at Whitney Field on Saturday night, but came up short in the overtime period. The Big Red entered the game as one of the surprise teams in the area and more importantly undefeated through four weeks of Firelands Conference play. Plymouth can still pick up some impressive wins down the stretch with games remaining against Western Reserve and Crestview.

Has anyone noticed what's going on in Milan? The Chargers started the season 1-3, but have now won three of four. Edison is 3-2 in the SBC and 4-4 overall with games remaining against Clyde and Huron.

Perkins was able to pick up their first win of the season on Friday by beating Port Clinton 20-6. Mitchell Benkey topped the 100 yard mark again for the Pirates who finish the season with games against Margaretta and Oak Harbor.  Coach Jason Ziegler told me in an e-mail this week "it's been tough, but the guys are still playing hard and that's all I can ask for." Jason will be our special guest next week on our podcast preview for Week 10.

Featured Game (This game we'll be covering and will provide complete scoring updates on our Scoreboard):

Tiffin Columbian (7-1, 2-1) @ Sandusky (7-1, 3-0)
Audio Preview

The Northern Ohio League season will come down to the final two weeks and our remaining featured games on North Coast Pigskin.

This week the Columbian Tornados will travel to Strobel Field to take on the Blue Streaks.  This game was circled on most people's calendar at the beginning of the season, but most prognosticators felt it would decide the outright Northern Ohio League title. No one, outside of Bellevue, predicted Columbian would fall to the Redmen in Week Six.

Sandusky
has been rolling since they opened the season with a 40-28 loss to Fremont Ross. The Streaks have won seven straight games and have climbed back into the playoff picture. The next two weeks can solidify their playoff positioning and give them an outright NOL title.

The passing trio of Lucas Poggiali at quarterback and receivers Dameyion Smith and Tristen Jeffries are the most prolific in school history. Both Poggiali and Smith hold school records for touchdowns in a season.  Sandusky also has a 1000 yard rusher in Marquis Winston that helps make the Streaks the most explosive offense in the area.  The Blue Streaks first string defense has been stout in NOL play. The Sandusky starters have yet to yield a score in league action.

Columbian has rebounded from their loss to Bellevue and has spanked Shelby and Willard in the last two weeks. The Tornados are led by quarterback Ben Davis and receiver Jordan Dye. The duo hooked up three times last week in their 41-13 win at Willard.

Watch the game Friday night at 10 p.m. on www.Fandy.com.

Other Games of Interest:
St. Paul (5-3, 4-1) @ Crestview (8-0, 5-0)
If the Cougars want to continue their trek toward an undefeated season, Firelands Conference Championship and a playoff berth they have to beat St. Paul on Friday night. The Cougars have used the legs of Mason Minnich to gash their opponents. The Flyers have been involved in one possession games four of the last five weeks and have won all but one of those contest (Western Reserve). Crestview had every opportunity to win the match-up last year in Norwalk, but fell short 13-7.

Port Clinton (5-3, 4-1) @ Huron (7-1, 4-1)
The Redskins are still hoping for a winning season, but they end the regular season with games against Huron and Clyde.  The Tigers have rebounded from their loss to Clyde to open SBC play and have picked up four straight wins. This game is big for both teams in the SBC standings and for playoff points as well.
